All 632 of the state’s plows and 200 private contractors hit the roads Thursday to combat continually falling snow and fierce cold. Drivers worked 17-hour shifts with only 3 hours off, Department of Transportation spokesperson Kevin Nursick said.

Plows were able to handle the evening commute, Nursick said. But he was more concerned about the Friday morning commute, when several inches of snow have accumulated.

“When it takes our trucks 2 to 3 hours to make a full loop, that means you have 2 to 3 hours of accumulation taking place,” Nursick said.

Gov. Dannel Malloy told residents to stay off the roads if possible.

“We are urging people to stay off the road tonight. Once you get home, stay at home,” Malloy said.

Both Metro North and Amtrak are operating modified service for Friday.
