Saturday’s low of minus-9 degrees at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks breaks the record for the date of minus-7 set in 1981. It was the coldest morning in more than 30 years in parts of Connecticut.
The deep freeze will temporarily come to an end as a storm will track to the west of Connecticut Sunday night into Monday, transporting milder air with mostly rain and not snow. Another shot of arctic cold will return late Monday afternoon with the potential for slick travel Monday evening due to the combination of falling temperatures and snow showers.
Arctic cold high pressure will move across the Northeast Tuesday and Wednesday with daytime temperatures averaging in the teens with wind-chill values near zero. The wind will diminish late Wednesday as high pressure moves overhead. The high will move offshore Thursday and Friday, allowing for a weak low pressure to develop on a warm front to move in our direction with some light snow late Thursday and Friday. At this point it does not look to be a big storm.
