A new black mark for an already highly-criticized project still under construction.

Graffiti has appeared on a section of CTFastrak, otherwise known as the busway between New Britain and Hartford.

In four spots, a graffiti vandal has “tagged” the new Flatbush Avenue bridge going over the tracks with spray-paint.

It doesn’t look like much now, but this may be a sign of more graffiti to come.

State leaders, who have been critical of CTFastrak from the beginning, have argued $600 million are being spent on the project which very few are going to use…and now the graffiti is threatening to make the busway even more expensive.

“There’s serious questions about what the costs of maintenance are going to be, the problems of snow removal when you have these walls on each side that they might have to use payloaders, and now we’ve got something where we might be having an almost ongoing effort to keep the graffiti off the walls,” State Senator Joe Markley (R-Southington) said.

The CT Department Of Transportation said the construction contractors are responsible for graffiti cleanup while the busway is being built…after that the DOT handles the cleanup.
