ORANGE – Students of Peck Place School will continue to be displaced after damage caused by flooding more than a week ago has turned out to be more severe than school officials first thought.

Peck Place School has been closed since Jan. 7 and students are currently being split between Turkey Hill and Race Brook schools. But asbestos discovered at Peck Place as officials cleaned up after the flooding means abatement is necessary and a new plan has been hatched for the school’s roughly 370 students, school officials said in a letter to parents.

The board of education approved a move of Peck Place students to Yale’s “West Campus,” which is located off Marsh Hill Road in Orange. But before the move can become official furniture needs to be moved and the space will be reconfigured into classrooms. Lunch, recess, special schedules and bus pickup and dropoff are also being worked out, school officials said.

A meeting will be held tonight at 6 p.m. at the Mary L. Tracey building for Peck Place parents to get an update on the process and to answer any questions. An orientation and open house at the West Campus will be held at a later date, school officials said.
