DANBURY — Three people were killed in a three-vehicle crash on Route 53 at the Bethel town line on Tuesday morning, officials said.
Police said Edward Kish, 45, was driving a 2001 Honda Accord north on Route 53 when he lost control of his vehicle and crossed the center line, crashing into a southbound 2007 Buick Lucerne and pushing it into a box truck.
According to police, witnesses said Kish was slumped over the wheel of his car before the crash.
Kish and the occupants of the Buick, Bethel residents Jane Shannon, 78, and William Shannon, 77, were taken to Danbury Hospital where they died from their injuries, police said.
The driver of the truck was also taken to the hospital and was treated for minor injuries, police said.
Fire officials said the accident happened around 11:45 a.m. Danbury and Bethel firefighters had to extricate the three victims from the cars.
Route 53 was closed while the accident scene was cleared.
The crash is under investigation, police said. Witnesses are asked to contact Sgt. Rory DeRocco or Officer Lance Brevard at 203-797-2157 or 203-797-2156.
