Authorities say a kitchen fire may have been the cause of a massive building fire that displaced 17 apartment residents. FOX CT’s Mike Magnoli has more.
NEW HAVEN — A woman suffered burns to her face and legs and 17 people were displaced on Friday afternoon when a fire badly damaged a three-story apartment building on Farren Avenue on Friday afternoon, fire officials said.
The woman, who was taken to the burn unit at Bridgeport Hospital, was in her kitchen in a first floor apartment at the time of the fire, according to police Officer David B Hartman. She was able to speak to investigators, and was in stable condition, he said. She had not been identified as of late Friday night.
Other residents who were home at the time of the fire but managed to escape without injury, fire officials said. Hartman said officials had accounted for all residents.
Several 911 calls reported an explosion and fire at the 3-story apartment building at 95 Farren Ave., near Fulton Street, around 4 p.m., Hartman said. Part of the building collapsed as the fire burned. Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about an hours, Hartman said.
Fire Investigators expect to be on the scene into Saturday. The building is tentatively scheduled for demolition, possibly on Saturday, after investigators have concluded their work, Hartman said.
