Last Thursday evening, a vigil was held at the Milner School in Hartford, where 4 year old Shantay Drake attended pre-kindergarten. Drake and her mother, Susan Therrien, 43, were killed in an apartment fire on January 28. Surviving was six year old Kayla Drake, whose family struggles financially. That gave the administration at her elementary school an idea.

Shawn Wooden, the President, of the Hartford City Council, who had spoken numerous times at the Milner School, said the school was looking for someone to serve as a fiduciary for the surviving six year old Kayla. Wooden is a lawyer for Day Pitney of Hartford, has a significant trust and estates practice.

“Working with Bank of America, we decided to volunteer our services and we’ve set up this fund. We’re the custodian of the account,” said Wooden.

The Fund is called the Shantay Drake Memorial Fund. Proceeds will be exclusively for Kayla Drake. Deposits can be made at any Bank of America branch.

“There are lots of needs that she will have in the future and we want to make sure that she’s cared for,” added Wooden.

The Liberty Christian Center, at 23 Vine Street, in Hartford, will be the host to the funeral services for Shantay Drake Saturday morning, beginning at 10:00. She will be laid to rest at the Spring Grove Cemetery on Main Street.

There has also been a fund set up to help defray Shantay Drake’s funeral costs and other tenants of the three story apartment building fire, who were displaced by the fire.
