CANTON — A dog and a cat were rescued from a home that was badly damaged in a fire on Sunday morning.

The fire at 12 Colony Road broke out at around 11 a.m. on Sunday and was reported by a neighbor, said Canton Volunteer Fire & EMS Dept. Lt. Johnathan Gotaski. He said that police arrived shortly after that and reported that the house was fully involved. Flames were plainly visible inside the house when firefighters started to put the fire out, which took approximately 15 minutes, Gotaski said.

Gotaski said the homeowners were not there but that the first firefighters to arrive rescued a dog and a cat when they got inside the house.

Firefighters from Avon and New Hartford were also dispatched to help put out the blaze. Although the fire was put out quickly and with no injuries firefighters found that hydrants in the area had not been dug out after the snowstorm that hit on Feb. 5. Gotaski said a neighbor cleared snow from around a hydrant as firefighters arrived on the scene.

The town fire marshal along with staff from the state fire marshal’s office were investigating the blaze on Sunday evening and Gotaksi said the cause had not been determined. He said the house, which had been under renovation, is not habitable until repairs are made.
