An emergency call to a Middletown power plant re-energized anxious memories for folks living close to it.

Fifty firefighters total responded to Kleen Energy when a turbine caught fire. Fire Chief Robert Ross said about a thousand gallons of cooling oil leaked, igniting the fire.

The turbine is housed in its own room so the fire was contained in that room and firefighters quickly put it out; however, it continued to smolder in insulation.

A large section of Kleen Energy blew up four years ago during construction while the lines were being purged with high pressure natural gas.

The explosion killed six workers, and later a federal investigation found hundreds of violations at the site.

“The plant is not closed, the other turbine is operating, is producing electricity, when you compare the tragic events of 4 years ago, this is nothing compared to that,” Chief Ross said.

No one was hurt in the fire.
