The Connecticut Department Of Transportation is now willing to share its supply of road salt.

Governor Dannel Malloy announced that towns and cities running critically low on their own salt can load up at one of six CONNDOT facilities around the state.

Declaring a state of emergency, the governor also petitioned the federal government to relax weight limits on trucking in salt to replenish supplies.

A 30,000-ton delivery arrived Friday at the Port Of New Haven, and even more was scheduled to come soon.

“We had anticipated a new delivery, a new shipment of salt on the 28th of February,” CONNDOT Commissioner James Redeker said.  “One of the reasons we were able to expedite our plan in an emergency basis is that they’re bringing a shipment on the 22nd, so they’ve actually moved up their delivery by about a week.”

CONNDOT said it pays $60 per ton for road salt.

Towns digging into CONNDOT’s supply will be expected to reimburse the state.
