WEST HAVEN — Firefighters rescued a woman from a burning home early Thursday, but some family cats died, a fire official said.

The fire started in the Wilson Avenue house about 5 a.m. and took about an hour to extinguish, Fire Chief Stephen Scafariello said. Three of four occupants were able to get out on their own, but one woman was trapped on the first floor and had to be carried out, he said.

The woman, who apparently suffered from smoke-inhalation, was conscious, Scafariello said.

The family had six cats, some of which died.

Firefighters were wrapping up their work at the scene at 7:30 a.m., but the investigation of what caused the fire continues.
