For Black History Month, it is a banner year for one Hartford woman.

Charmaine Craig has  just been recognized by Aetna for her environmental leadership and the distinction is calendar-worthy.

Craig, who is a Community Outreach Director at Knox, Inc. in Hartford, was just named one of Aetna’s National Urban Sustainability Heroes for her work in parks and gardens all over the capital city.

Officially, Craig can now be called  “Miss October” in Aetna’s African American History Calendar.

“It’s been my life’s work ever since I arrived here to help keep the city green and clean and beautiful,” said Craig, an employee at Knox for nearly a decade.

Craig, along with about 2,000 volunteers, are busy working on 12 acres of parks and gardens in Hartford.

Aetna’s calendar, which has honored heroes like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Oprah Winfrey is now in its 33rd year. To volunteer on future projects click on www.knoxparks.org
