Sikorsky Aircraft said late Friday it plans to cut 600 jobs in the next several weeks with most of the reductions hitting Connecticut employees.

The helicopter manufacturer, with about half of its 16,500 employees in Stratford, is splitting the cuts equally between salaried and union employees.

“This workforce reduction will occur over the next several weeks and follow significant cost reduction actions that the company has already taken,” company spokesman Paul Jackson said in an email. In September, Sikorsky cut 200 jobs, citing lower defense spending and rising costs.

“These decisions are always difficult to make but necessary to protect the company’s competitiveness and future,” Jackson said. “As is our practice, we will provide transition assistance for those employees who are affected.”

Rocco Calo, secretary and treasurer of the Teamsters Local 1150, which represents about 4,800 Sikorsky workers in Connecticut and Florida, said the cuts are largely brought on by reductions in Black Hawk orders because of defense cuts.
