ASHFORD — A state trooper charged last week with drunken driving has had his police powers suspended and is assigned to administrative duty, a state police spokesman said.

Trooper David Lavoie, 43, a 19-year veteran, crashed his patrol car on Route 44 in Ashford shortly after midnight Wednesday, state police said.

Lavoie was injured in the crash and taken to Windham Hospital, where he was treated and released. Upon his release from the hospital, he was charged with drunken driving and failure to drive in the established lane. Police said he was taken to Troop C, processed and released on $500 bail.

His handgun and other equipment were seized at the crash scene by a sergeant.

Lavoie is scheduled to appear March 5 in Superior Court in Danielson.

State police Lt. J. Paul Vance said Lavoie will perform administrative tasks while the court case is pending and while an internal investigation is underway.

His patrol car was heavily damaged in the crash.
