A third World Series title since 2004 isn’t enough for the Red Sox to overtake the Yankees in the annual popularity poll of Connecticut baseball fans released Tuesday morning by Quinnipiac University.
The Yankees out-polled the Red Sox in a study of Connecticut fans, 43-37. The gap in 2013 was 42-38. The Mets trailed the two AL East powers with 8 percent of the vote.
In breaking down the vote by counties, Fairfield again proved to be Yankee country as the Bombers led the Sox 57-18 with 16 percent for the Mets. In Hartford, however, the numbers were different, as the Sox led 51-36 with a mere 3 percent for the Mets.
“Boston’s World Series victory doesn’t mean beans in Connecticut, where more fans back the New York Yankees – the favorites for four years now,” Douglas Schwartz, director of the poll, said in a release. “Men and women have shifted, but the overall result is little changed. The Yankees huge margin in Fairfield County gives them a statewide edge.”
The poll also tried to gauge interest in baseball and 28 percent of men said they were very interested in the sport. Eighteen percent of women agreed.
