The ice fishing season is thawing, but Wednesday it remained thick enough to continue inch by inch.

At Silver Lake in Berlin, a lone fisherman tested the ice to make sure it was safe to walk out on.

Phillip Vitali said the ice was five to seven inches thick in the spot he fished, and that he won’t step foot on ice any less than four inches thick.

Vitali couldn’t believe he was still fishing in Berlin in mid-March.

“I’ve never fished here this late in the season, yeah, it’s pretty amazing,” Vitali said.

Environmental Conservation Police with DEEP continue to check on fishermen to make sure they’re obeying fishing rules and to warn them that the ice can be dangerously thin in some spots.
