MILFORD — A 24-year-old New Jersey man died Saturday and a woman who was with him was hospitalized after the canoe they were riding in overturned on Long Island Sound off Milford.

Jeffrey Young of North Caldwell, N.J. died at Milford Hospital. A Coast Guard crew pulled him the sound just east of Charles Island. He did not have a pulse at the time, officials said.

He and the woman, who was not identified, were canoeing between Silver Sands State Park and Charles Island Saturday afternoon when the canoe overturned, a Milford fire department spokesman said.

Milford firefighters said they received a 911 call at 2:11 p.m. and sent a boat in search of the canoeists. Stratford firefighters and the Coast Guard responded too.

The Milford firefighters found the woman near the canoe, and returned her to shore at Milford Harbor. She was then taken to Milford Hospital for treatment of hypothermia. She was later released.

A Coast Guard boat found Young and its crew immediately began CPR.

State Department of Environmental Conservation police are investigating.
