A legislative committee is scheduled Wednesday do discuss a bill that would require public schools to include information about teen dating violence as part of school curriculum.

The legislature’s education committee is considering the law in part due to alarming statistics about teen dating violence. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that one in 11 adolescents say they have been a victim of physical dating violence.

Even more startling, teens who report being physically hurt in a dating relationship were more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors like binge drinking, taking drugs and attempting suicide.

The CDC also reports that minority students have higher rates of dating violence than white students.

Nineteen states have laws mandating discussions of teen dating violence in public schools and three other states – Oklahoma, Missouri and Georgia – are considering similar legislation this year.
