It’s almost the end of the road for this legislative session, but before it’s over, the trucking industry is hoping to push through a tax break.
The Motor Transport Association of Connecticut is lobbying legislators to waive sales tax on parts and labor if the repairs can be attributed to this past winter’s road clearing efforts.
Mechanics said road salt and other chemical treatment, especially magnesium chloride, have been corrosive on parts like muffler and brake lines.
Of course, those repairs can cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars, plus tax.
“6.3%, we don’t think that’s unreasonable, there’s a lot of pain here that’s being felt by people who have operated vehicles on the highway, and we’re just asking the state to share the pain,” Mike Riley, President of the Motor Transport Association of CT, said.
Legislators pointed out that it may be too late to get the sales tax exemption discussed and voted on this legislative session.
