A Robertson Elementary School teacher has been absent this week and third grader Trayona Mills said the halls are buzzing.

“People say she’s out because her husband was in a car accident,” said Trayona.

Not quite.

Manchester Police said they recently busted Kristen Dergosits with more than $12,000 worth of drugs. Investigators sent pictures of the meth, marijuana plants and packaged weed they say they seized from Dergosits’ Ribbon Mill apartment.

The third grade teacher taught Trayona’s brother a few years ago.

“I’m very surprised. She’s an excellent teacher. She’s a very excellent teacher, so I’m very surprised. I’m, I’m shocked,” said Shante Mills, Trayona’s mother.

The educator and her husband, Robert Dergosits, were booked on charges including operating a drug factory, possession with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a school and cultivation of marijuana.

The list continues, much to David Maxwell’s horror. He has a first grader at Robertson Elementary.

“To think that someone in my son’s school, especially a figure like that, that they’re supposed to be looking up to, is doing those things, I’m just really taken back by that,” said Maxwell.

Assistant superintendent Amy Radikas points out these are only allegations. She said the administration didn’t tell parents about the drug investigation because it’s a “pending personnel matter.”

Only students in Dergosits’ class were told that she’d be absent until further notice. Radikas said the administration did not mention Dergosits’ arrest.

The incident happened a week ago. Mills and Maxwell found out when reporters showed up at the school Wednesday afternoon. Maxwell said he wishes the school gave parents a heads up.

“I’m wondering what my son is hearing. If he’s hearing little bits and pieces before his dad even gets a chance to talk to him about stuff, you know?

He said he’s not looking forward to explaining the drug arrest to his young kids. “I didn’t want to have that talk now,” he said.
