In a statewide show of generosity, volunteers in 39 Connecticut towns teamed up Saturday with HomeFront, a program bringing free home repairs to low-income families.

In Berlin, local contractors worked on a house damaged during Superstorm Sandy.

With power tools and big hearts, volunteers from St. Paul Church in Kensington went to work, lending a hand to neighbors.

“We come in and clean up and do a lot for the homeowner who can’t afford it otherwise,” said HomeFront volunteer Robert Fischer.

Four local contractors donated time, effort and expertise to the project in Berlin.

The project is one of many organized by HomeFront, a Stamford-based group dedicated to keeping low-income homeowners in their houses with an improved quality of life through substantial repairs done for free.

“We want to do the gospel. We want to spread the word, help others with our talents,” Fischer said.

The American Red Cross and AmeriCares are joining HomeFront to provide repairs for 15 homes damaged by Superstorm Sandy.

Owners are sincerely grateful.

“They’re just pleased. They’re joyful. They’re hugging us and giving us all sorts of praises for the work we do,” Fischer said.

In all, 75 homes were spruced up around the state by the end of the day Saturday.

Teamwork and kindness, making a huge difference in the community.

“It helps out people who can’t do it themselves. I’m not that young, but I can help out It’s all it takes,” said volunteer Gus McGrath.
