Reports: U.S. Attorney investigating General Motors recall

(CNN)- General Motors is recalling 50,000 SUVs because of possible false readings on fuel gauges.

The company said a software problem could lead to a faulty reading on both ends of the range by as much as a quarter of a tank.

This could lead drivers to run out of fuel without any warning– putting the vehicle at risk of stalling and increasing the chance of a crash.

The recall will affect the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia.

The auto company said dealers will reprogram the software for free starting immediately.
