The so-called IRS Scam continues to grow, and the immigrant population appears to be a favorite target.
South Windsor Police said a Pakistani-American couple was recently scammed out of more than $1300.
They received a call from a man claiming to be with the IRS who told them they owed on their taxes, and that they needed to pay up or be arrested.
So he actually stayed on the phone with the wife as she drove to a Vernon CVS to buy Green Dot Cards to fund a PayPal account.
South Windsor’s mayor, an immigrant himself, believes many naturalized Americans are easily intimidated.
“(The) immigrant community is a law-abiding community, and they do not want to break any laws,” Mayor Saud Anwar said.
Mayor Anwar is also spreading the word that the IRS will not call or email people to pay owed taxes, and certainly will not require payment over the phone or by wiring money.
