Those behind Infant Swimming Resource say there are three layers of defense against the drowning of a child. First is supervision. Second is locks and pool alarms. However, if those fail – and sometimes they do – the third line of defense lies in the hands of a child.
Every summer we hear about it – children who slip away from the eyes of their guardians and fall into water. But what if when that child falls in, they could stay afloat, and more importantly, stay alive?
Five days a week at Healthtrax North Haven, Jody Mantie teaches one-on-one lessons with young children to help equip them with the skills to their lives. In a matter of weeks, children learn the know-how of preventing and accidental death.
Generally it takes about a month – five days a week 10 minutes a day – for infants to learn the rollback to float self rescue technique.
