NEW HAVEN — A 44-year-old man was shot to death on Withrop Avenue Saturday night, police said.
The incident occurred at around 9:43 p.m. in the area of Winthrop Avenue near Whalley Avenue, according to police spokesman David B. Hartman.
Hartman said in a news release that several people called 911 to report that a man had been shot at the doorway of This Custom Design print shop at 465 Winthrop Avenue.
Officers responded to the location and found Otis Powell suffering from several gunshot wounds to his upper body, police said.
He was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he died of his injuries, police said.
Detectives are investigating and speaking to potential witnesses, but Hartman said that police have not received a description of a potential suspect or suspect vehicle.
Police are also investigating an unrelated shooting that occurred at around 9:14 p.m. in the area of 52 Oak Ridge Drive Hartman said.
Lamar Swint, 26, of West Haven suffered a single gunshot wound to his upper right thigh, according to police.
Hartman said Swint told detectives he had been sitting in his car when a man opened the door and shot him. Swint told detectives he didn’t know the man who shot him, and was unable to provide a detailed description of the shooter other than that he is a black man between 5-foot-8 and 6-feet tall, police said.
The shooting occurred as a party was taking place inside the residence, and police said Swift was taken by ambulance to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he has been treated for a non-life threatening injury.
Anyone who may have witnessed either of these crimes or could provide information to investigators is urged to call 203-946-6304 and speak with detectives. Callers may remain anonymous.
