BOSTON — Bristol native and former NFL star Aaron Hernandez killed two men in a 2012 drive-by shooting because one of them spilled a drink on him earlier in the night, prosecutors said Wednesday in describing the slayings as “entirely senseless.”
Hernandez pleaded not guilty to seven charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, stemming from the double homicide in Boston that occurred six weeks before he signed a $40 million contract extension with the New England Patriots.
The charges are the result of a previously dead-end investigation that authorities re-opened after Hernandez was arrested in the June 2013 shooting of Odin Lloyd. Hernandez was friends with Lloyd, of Dorchester, but had no connection to Daniel Abreu and Safiro Furtado, the two Cape Verdean men killed in the Boston shooting.
