HARTFORD — Trustees of the University of Connecticut on Tuesday approved final development agreements for a new regional campus in downtown Hartford. Construction is expected to begin in about a year.

The agreements cap an 18-month effort to relocate UConn’s West Hartford campus to the city and solidify the university’s plans to establish the campus at the former Hartford Times property on Prospect Street.

The new campus could welcome its first students in 2017.

The trustees cleared the way for the $70 million-plus project to be developed by HB Nitkin Group, based in Greenwich. Nitkin already has development rights to the Times site, part of the Front Street district.
