Newington police are still investigating an accident that sent three people to the hospital Tuesday afternoon.

A green chevy pick-up truck ran into the people as they crossed the street at the intersection of Christian Lane and Kelsey Street in Newington, police said. All three victims suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. Two were transported to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford and one was transported to Hartford Hospital.

Police did not release the identities of the victims, but witnesses described them as two women and a child.

“I saw a little boy with scrapes. I saw a mother with scrapes. It was sickening,” one witness said.

Witnesses also said that the driver of the pick-up tried to flee the scene but was stopped when he was purposely blocked by Richard Ruiz, a man driving a white van.

“He was nervous. He was like, I’ve got to get out of here, I’ve got to get our of here,” Ruiz said.

Police could not  confirm that the driver tried to leave the scene but said he was cooperative. Anyone with information is asked to contact Newington Police at 860-666-8445.
