The Department Of Energy And Environmental Protection literally cleared the way for Connecticut’s newest state park.

In its hey day, families flocked to the 143 acre property in Moodus when it was known as Elm Camp, Ted Hilton’s Hideaway, and Frank Davis Resort.

But once abandoned, the property became overgrown, and the buildings and cabins there were easy targets for vandals.

DEEP bought the land and cleaned it up by bulldozing buildings, digging up underground tanks, and removing asbestos.

It’s now Sunrise State Park.

State Rep. Melissa Ziobron (R-East Haddam) spearheaded the renewal.

“I’d love to see it kind of beautified a little bit,” Ziobron said.  “If we can just keep the momentum and kind of keep these things of the check list, it would be even better.”

DEEP said the cost of land acquisition and cleanup at Sunrise State Park was almost $5 million.
