At last night’s city council meeting,t he room was packed with people against building the new Rock Cats stadium down down.

The $60 million baseball park would go up at 1214 Main Street. It’s an empty lot now, but city leaders hope to open the stadium by opening day 2016.

The meeting highlighted backlash from those who live near the proposed site and questions about the plan and details.

The 220,000 square foot stadium would hold more than 10,000 spectators. Leaders say it would also bring hundreds of full-time jobs to Hartford. City council president Sean Wooden says the council just learned of the plan last week and is aware of skepticism.

“People are concerned bout the price tag people are concerned about other priorities of the city and the main thing is that a lot more info needs to be shared,” Wooden said.

Mayor Pedro Segarra stands by the plan, he wasn’t at the meeting but said “There will be many opportunities to learn more about how this revitalization will be an asset to the community for years to come.”

From here, the proposal goes to committee and then will be brought before council again next month. That meeting is on July 21 and that’s the next time the public can come and speak out about the plan.
