Two dentists from Fairfield County were arrested and charged today in Medicaid frauds.

Both Paul Dengelegi, 51, and Gregory Betsor, 71, were arrested by inspectors from the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. Both were charged with one count of larceny in the first degree by defrauding a public community and one count of insurance fraud.

Dengelegi allegedly continued to bill and receive payments from the government’s Medicaid healthcare program after he was barred from doing so. The arrest warrant says he submitted 989 claims to Medicaid from April to October 2011 and received payments amounting to $94,792 despite being barred from participating in the federal and state funded healthcare system for low-income people since 2009.

Betser’s arrest warrant alleges that between December 2012 and February 2013 he submitted false claims for visiting patients in long-term care facilities and performing dental work. He in fact didn’t visit facilities on the dates associated with the claims. He also submitted claims for denture work for patients who didn’t have dentures. The warrant states Betser was paid $25,661.82 for false claims.

Dengelegi was released on a $100,000 non-surety bond. He’s scheduled to appear in court on June 26. Betser was released on a $50,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear in court on June 26.
