A local couple who has given back so much to the community now needs the community to help them.

Amanda and Chris Bernier recently learned that Amanda has Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, just days after getting the exciting news that they were expecting their first child.

The couple has worked together for years at both the North Madison Volunteer Fire Company and the Madison Emergency Medical Service. Amanda is a firefighter and EMT, while her husband, Chris, is the director of EMS and a deputy chief at the fire department.

ALS is a progressive neuro-degenerative disease. Amanda has begun to lose basic motor skills, her muscles will progressively atrophy. The disease eventually leads to paralysis and death.

There is no cure or treatment.
