The city wants its money, and officials hope this campaign will help them get it.

It’s not just about booting cars with unpaid citations. Beat the Boots also gives drivers a chance to save some money for those outstanding citations.

Today marks the first day of the Beat the Boots citation amnesty program. From today until July 18, any motorist with citations over six months old will receive 20 percent off the total amount due for up to five citations.

Now, over the weekend, Hartford Parking Authority started another portion of the campaign – booting vehicles. They began to put boots on cars with five or more unpaid parking tickets.

Leaders say they’ve given a fair warning to motorists. You may have seen these cars around town. They’re white with an orange boot attached to the vehicle. The city began deploying those vehicles weeks ago – it’s like a mobile billboard for the campaign for people to think – “Hey, I need to pay my ticket.”

City officials say the boots are better than having to tow cars. If you do need to pay citations, you can do so online at hartfordparking.com or Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the office of parking management.
