With the Fourth of July falling on a Friday, that means most drivers are heading out today. And Triple A predicts that this will be the busiest July 4 weekend on the roads in seven years.

Drivers in New England are looking at the highest gas prices for July 4 in the past six years. Gas prices rose more than 1 cent just in the past week and the average is $3.96 per gallon. That’s much higher than the national average of $3.68 per gallon.

Out on the road, 2.1 million people from New England will travel at least 50 miles from their home this weekend – that’s a volume record. Of course, the most popular way to go is by car. Much fewer will fly, but that number is up as well. 150,000 New Englanders will get away via local airports.
