HARTFORD — A crew has stopped a leak that forced police to shut down South End streets at lunchtime Thursday.

The leak happened shortly before noon, when a construction crew on Wethersfield Avenue hit a gas main. Several streets were closed to traffic, including parts of Wethersfield and Franklin avenues and Elliott Street.

There were early reports of evacuations. It isn’t clear if anyone was sickened or injured.

Workers from Connecticut Natural Gas stopped the leak before 12:30 p.m.
