It is officially named the Hart Bridge, but in Cornwall it is known as the “Covered Bridge.” The famous one-lane covered bridge, a symbol of the town, is being celebrated.

The bridge is turning 150 years old this month, and town leaders and local artists are throwing a “Paint the Bridge Party.”

No, they aren’t applying another rust red coat on the actual bridge, rather, artists — both professional and amateur — are being invited to come to Cornwall on July 26 to create a painting or sculpture about the bridge.

“It’s free and fun for everyone,” said Melissa Andrews from the Cornwall Economic Development Commission.  “You can walk around this beautiful town and see this gorgeous bridge, 150 years old.”

Todd Piker, an artist and potter who owns Cornwall Bridge Pottery, said of the bridge, “It is a great opportunity to galvanize all of us in town about a single idea.”

Piker has already created pottery that showcases the renderings of the bridge.

Andrews added, “The bridge is something that brings us all together.”

The historic landmark spent decades as a toll bridge. It has spanned the Housatonic River since 1864.
