The University of Connecticut will pay $1.28 million in a settlement with five current and former students who filed a federal lawsuit in November, charging that the university mishandled their cases when they were raped or sexually assaulted.

A statement from UConn said the resolution “was reached to avoid the lengthy and expensive process of litigating the disputed claims at trial.”

“While UConn categorically denies the lawsuit’s allegations, the University and the plaintiffs said in a joint statement that they want to work toward the future rather than fighting over the past,” UConn’s statement said, “and, accordingly, have agreed to put to rest their factual disputes, settle the litigation, and move forward.”

The awards for plaintiffs in the case range from $25,000 for Carolyn Luby to $900,000 for Silvana Mocci.
