The Stamford Police Department has released a statement that it is investigating a fatal accident from earlier this afternoon in which a vehicle struck a pedestrian.

Stamford resident Janice Pierlert, 58, was walking within the crosswalk when she was struck by a vehicle and subsequently lodged beneath the car. The Stamford Fire Department helped to extricate the victim and transported her to Stamford Hospital Emergency Room, but she succumbed to her injuries.

The accident occurred at the corner of Summer Street and Hoyt Street at approximately 12:42 p.m. Norwalk resident Natalie Gainer, 59, was driving a 2007 Chevy Tahoe in the left lane heading southbound on Summer Street and attempted to make a left onto Hoyt Street when she struck Pierlert.

Gainer was transported to the hospital as well, and she was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
