Walmart is trying to help teachers’ wallets out for back-to-school shopping this year.

The chain is offering 10 percent savings back on classroom supplies purchases made between July 25 and July 31.

Teachers who shop at Walmart stores during this “Teacher Appreciation Week” will be eligible to receive a Walmart electronic gift card for 10 percent back. Up to 15,000 items are eligible for the savings.

This is the first time that Walmart is offering teachers a rebate. The company said in a press release that the decision was made to start a teachers’ savings program because 53 percent of teachers received less in funding last year than the year before.

Walmart’s executive vice president of general merchandise for U.S. stores, Steve Bratspies, said “On average, teachers around the country spend about $1,000 readying their classrooms, and half of that comes from reaching into their own wallets to make sure students have what they need.”

To receive the rebate teachers should shop during the eligible dates and then visit http://www.walmart.com/teachers before August 15. Teachers will need to enter their school’s information and receipt transaction code. The gift card will be sent via email within 14 days of submitting the receipt online.
