A field trip of sorts for state and City of New Haven decision-makers.
The Department Of Energy And Environmental Protection Commissioner and New Haven city planners took a yellow school bus to several problems areas on or near the coast, which are vulnerable to severe weather.
DEEP and the city plan to partner on several projects, including the restoration of deteriorating sea walls and eroded coastal areas.
DEEP also wants to make the finished products environmentally-friendly.
“Using trees, plantings, bio-swales, other sort of amenities to slow down storm water, and they happen to also grow trees and plants and flowers and things that a neighborhood would be very positive of having improved instead of a big grey pipe,” DEEP Commissioner Robert Klee said.
City planners said some projects have already started, while others are still in the planning phase.
