Tropical Storm Bertha may cause riptide currents at New England beaches as the storm heads near the east-coast of the United States, according to the National Weather Service.

The Weather Service sent a warning to swimmers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island this morning on Twitter.

Riptides are powerful channels of water moving away from the shore that can sweep swimmers out to sea.

There are no watches or warnings for land, because the storm is expected to stay off the east-coast of the United States.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency sent out an advisory telling swimmers to pay attention to warnings from life guards and not to swim alone.
