(CNN) — A car crash in Argentina killed three members of Pope Francis’ extended family Tuesday — including his 8-month-old and 2-year-old grand-nephews — and seriously injured another, police said.

A truck struck a car driven by the pope’s nephew Emanuel Horacio Bergoglio on a highway in Cordoba at about 12:30 a.m., Cordoba police spokeswoman Carina Ferreyra said.

Emanuel Bergoglio’s sons — Jose Bergoglio, 8 months, and Antonio Bergoglio, 2 — and his wife and the boys’ mother, Valeria Carmona, 36, died, police said.

Emanuel Bergoglio was taken to a hospital in Cordoba, where he was in critical condition Tuesday morning, Ferreyra said.

Pope Francis is “deeply hurt” by news that a car crash killed some of his relatives in Argentina, a Vatican spokesman said Tuesday. “The Pope has been informed of the tragic accident that took place in Argentina involving some of his family members,” the Rev. Federico Lombardi said. “He is deeply hurt. He asks to all of those who participate in his sorrow to be with him in prayers.”
