As the number of challenges keeps going up, the frigid water keeps flowing down.
It seems everyone knows someone who has been doused by the Ice Bucket Challenge. And with one little bucket, one challenger has made a big statement for his cause.
A ventilator keeps him breathing, he speaks through a special device that uses eye tracking software and a synthetic voice, and he is paralyzed from the neck down, but 53-year old David McClain, who has ALS, still has a strong will.
From his New Haven home, McClain, also known as "Tex," took the Ice Bucket Challenge.
"It's in his character, he'd want to do anything to get the word out," said David's wife and caregiver, Donna McClain.
It was Donna who did the deed of pouring a bowl of ice cubes over her husbands head as he visibly worked up a smile in his bed.
With his voice machine, McClain said, "I can still smile and love my family and my friends. ALS can take away but cannot touch my attitude or my faith in God."
David--who has four children--was nominated by his son, Ben, who mentioned his father had been battling ALS for 12 years. Only about five percent of people who have ALS live for more than 10 years, according to CNN.
Ben noted his father was a standout athlete before being diagnosed with ALS, which is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He even earned his third degree black belt in karate.
"He's fighting and he's focusing on what he can do and using what he has to encourage others," Ben said.
McClain, whose room is part medical ward and part man cave (he's an avid Dallas Cowboys fan), communicated that while his body is weak, his mind is sharp, and so is his message.
McClain said, "I don't dwell on the things I can't do but rather on the things I can do, as bad as life can seem, there is always hope."
