During the extended Labor Day weekend, which begins Thursday, Aug. 28 and ends Monday, Sept. 1, AAA expects 34.7 million Americans to travel. This is a 1.3 percent increase from 2013. Out of those travelers, 29.7 million are expected to drive, 2.65 million will fly and 2.35 million will use a different form of transportation.
As for the local impact, according to AAA’s national annual Labor Day holiday survey 1.6 percent more New Englanders will travel for the weekend than in 2013. That’s more than the national projection of 1.3 percent.
The good news? The travel survey showed that gas prices will be at the lowest level for the month since 2010. The bad news? Airfares are 2 percent higher than last year. The worse news? AAA Two Diamond hotels will cost 9 percent more, while AAA Three Diamond hotels will cost 6 percent more.

Just a few weeks after Labor Day comes fall, and according to a TripAdvisor study of 2,600 Americans 83 percent plan to take a leisure trip this fall–up 16 percent from those who said they traveled last year. The respondents credit the surge in travel this fall to fewer crowds than in summer, a more pleasant climate than in summer and a desire to see fall foliage.
New York City is the most popular city respondents said they were traveling to, followed by Boston, Orlando, Las Vegas and San Francisco.
