Students in New Britain and Middletown are receiving tools for school from some citizens who are anxious to give back to their communities.
Mariah Moore, 22, of Cromwell, started charitable work two years ago when she handed out Christmas gifts to needy children through the Little Elves Little Angels charity. She has also helped raise awareness and money for a Middletown family whose home burned down in May following a propane tank explosion.
Wednesday afternoon Moore, who is a Certified Nurse Assistant at Middlesex Hospital, provided a special treat for 150 students at the Macdonough Elementary School. During their back to school ice cream social, she is handed out backpacks with school supplies in them.
And on Saturday there will be an opportunity for New Britain students--in kindergarten through eighth grade--to receive school supplies too.
Timothy and Torrence Conaway, who have organized holiday meals and toy drives for New Britain's needy, are using a first come, first served basis to award school supplies at a local barber shop.
This Saturday, August 30, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Blaze Barber Shop, located at 631 West Main St., children will be awarded school essentials. There will also be raffle prizes, including haircuts and gift cards.
