The Connecticut shipbuilding industry is bigger than you might think.

The American Maritime Partnership, who speaks for the domestic maritime industry as a whole, joined with the Shipbuilders Council of America to report new data on the state of Connecticut's boating industry.

The state ranks fourth nationally for number of private sector jobs in shipbuilding and repairs--there are about 8,870 private sector jobs--and in all there are a total of 22,710 shipyard jobs in the state.

Shipyards contribute $2.5 billion annually to the state's economy, and workers earn more than $1.7 billion collectively.

Adam Wronowski, vice president of Thames Shipyard, says the proximity of Thames Shipyard to both Boston and New York City helps bring out-of-state business in.
