The New Haven Road Race kicked off Monday morning for its 37th year.

The races included the Kids Fun Run, the 5K and the 20K.

An estimated 7,000 runners from 37 states participated.

Girma Mecheso, 26, won the 20K race and took home more than $45,000 in prize money.

Security was increased this year, as it was last year after the Boston Marathon Bombings. New Haven Police patrolled, and all runners had to check their bags. No backpacks were allowed on the New Haven Green or near the finish line.

Tow trucks were also out early towing away cars parked along the race route.
