A series of group homes will close throughout the state later this year, and hundreds of people will lose their jobs.
According to the Connecticut Department of Labor, REM Connecticut Community Services will shut their doors on the Connecticut locations between Oct. 31, 2014 and Dec. 31, 2014. In all, 342 workers will be laid off during that time period.
The towns in which layoffs will occur include: Barkhamsted, Bloomfield, East Hartford, Haddam, Lebanon, Manchester, Mansfield, Meriden, Middletown, North Granby, Norwich, Somers, Tolland, Wallingford, Waterbury, Watertown, Windsor and Winsted.
REM Connecticut is part of The MENTOR Network, a nationwide network of local providers. Jobs are listed on The MENTOR Network’s website, and there are still jobs currently posted for REM locations throughout Connecticut.
FOX CT reached out to representatives late this evening from SEIU 1199 New England, the union that serves the workers at REM Connecticut, and state officials for comment.
REM Connecticut is a subgroup of homes that are part of the larger REM company, which serves communities across the United States.
REM Connecticut provides residential, clinical, transitional and early intervention services to people of all ages. The company works with the Department of Children and Families and the Department of Developmental Services. Some services that are provided included community living arrangements, continuous residential support, group day support, individualized day support, individualized home support, respite, supported employment and transportation.
