A perp took a fall into the water while stealing a boat engine last week in Branford.

Video from the Branford Yacht Club shows two suspects carrying a stolen engine from the club early in the morning on August 27. The suspects are seen on security video walking on the dock carrying the stolen engine. While walking backwards, one suspect lands in the water.

FOX CT spoke with the boat's owner about the ordeal.

"I'm really upset, it was a 99 Yamaha, relatively new," Lou DiLella, whose engine, which is worth about $3000, was stolen.

The engine was insured, but the model is now out of production.

It was secured with a lock and chain, so DiLella thinks the thieves must have used bolt cutters.

"Everybody works hard for what they have, as I have for the motor, and to have someone steal your property? It hurts. It hurts," DiLella said.

Branford police public information officer Capt. Geoff Morgan said they’ve had an uptick in boat-related burglaries in the past couple of weeks.

James Noel, who works at the Branford Yacht Club, said "It's not very characteristic, but it does happen from time to time. It is rare, but like any marina in this area, and from what police told us, it's starting to happen and it seems to happen in this part of the season."
