HAMDEN -- School district officials are taking a closer look at school security after a 13-year-old student brought a loaded gun to school last Friday.

"Anytime there's a gun in school, of course it's of grave concern and we take that very seriously," said Jody Goeler, superintendent of Hamden Public Schools. "We need to be vigilant to ensure that guns stay out of our schools, to ensure that students, when they see something, to say something, to report it immediately to adults so we can keep our schools safe."

According to Hamden Police, a man reported the gun missing Friday night. He told police the gun was usually kept locked up in his vehicle's glove box. After an investigation, police discovered his 13-year-old daughter took the gun to school and then later gave it to another 13-year-old friend after school at a nearby playground.

Police arrested both teens charged them with firearms violations and released them to the custody of their respective parents.

The superintendent says he's working with the chief of Hamden Police to plan a town hall-style meeting on school safety in the coming weeks.
